Abstract

MONSIVAIS-CARRILLO, Alejandro. Corruption and democratic legitimacy in Mexico. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2020, vol.82, n.3, pp.587-618.  Epub Sep 25, 2020. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2020.3.58503.

Several studies show that corruption usually undermines trust in institutions and loyalty to the political system. Focusing on Mexico -an emerging electoral democracy with high levels of political corruption-, this article finds out that corruption can also undermine citizen’s support for democracy. Where corruption is persistent and wide- spread, perceptions of political corruption have a negative effect on the belief that democracy is preferable to other systems of government.

Keywords : political support; legitimacy; corruption; democracy; México.
