Abstract

CIGALES, Marcelo  and  OLIVEIRA, Amurabi. Catholic sociology in Brazil through school textbooks. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2021, vol.83, n.1, pp.157-184.  Epub May 28, 2021. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2021.1.60026.

This article analyzes the history of Catholic sociology in Brazil between the 1920s and 1940s. It is based on the hypothesis that school textbooks reflected the projects presented by Catholic sociologists in the Brazilian educational field that reacted against attempts to explain the society in ways alien to the Christian social conception. It concludes that Catholic sociology failed to impose its interpretation of the social world and that, as it became more dissociated, this sociology approa- ched other paradigms, thus configuring what would be considered a scientific sociology.

Keywords : history of sociology; Catholic sociology; Brazilian educational field; textbooks.
