Abstract

PLANCARTE ESCOBAR, Rafael. Linking case studies and game theory. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2021, vol.83, n.4, pp.831-861.  Epub Dec 13, 2021. ISSN 2594-0651.

This essay shows that case studies can become explanatory through analytical narratives, in particular by applying static game theory analysis. This methodological conjunction is enhanced through process tracing, the mechanism approach and the interpretation of motives. Interpretation, a type of intentional explanation, is essential not only for the construction of analytical narratives, but also for bringing game theory closer to the expanded perspective of rationality. The article also offers some theoretical rudiments for the construction of an analytical narrative, useful for studying cases of collective action.

Keywords : narratives; case studies; game theory; interpretation; Jon Elster; rationality.
