Abstract

ESPINOSA SANTIAGO, Orlando. Mexico´s gubernatorial independent candidacies. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2022, vol.84, n.4, pp.839-876.  Epub Nov 23, 2022. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2022.4.60385.

Recent studies analyze the electoral success of independent candidates, but fail to explain why some contenders manage to win the candidacy while others do not. What factors accounts for this difference? It is argued that contenders with longer political careers have better conditions for achieving independent candidacies. With information from an original database including 97 gubernatorial pre-candidates in the 2015-2018 period, a logistic regression revealed the statistical significance of political trajectory and a 38 percent advantage for professional politicians.

Keywords : independent candidacies; independent candidates; governors; subnational executives; political trajectory.
