Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-IZQUIERDO, Rosa María  and  ANTOLINEZ-DOMINGUEZ, Inmaculada. Barriers and strategies for immigrant students in their school experience. Rev. Mex. Sociol [online]. 2023, vol.85, n.2, pp.339-369.  Epub May 05, 2023. ISSN 2594-0651.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iis.01882503p.2023.2.60562.

Based on Dubet, Martuccelli and Bourdieu, this study analyzes how immigrant students construct their educational experience and the role that cultural and social capital play in it. Empirically, the narratives of 32 immigrant teenagers from secondary schooling in Andalusia (Spain) were analyzed. The results show that the distance between cultural capitals translates into linguistic, communicative, and institutional barriers. The strategies identified include family support, which is evident in the construction of an educational project; the role of certain teachers who reinforce their cultural capital of origin; and a selective acculturation to strengthen social capital.

Keywords : school experience; cultural capital; secondary education; immigrant adolescents; sociology of migrations.
