In this article, the author locates the emergence of communication research within the socio-historic context of the development of the social sciences and the crisis of paradigms at the end of the 20th century. The piece reflects on the advantages and disadvantages of the field's transformation into a scientific discipline and the consequences in the development of communication research in Mexico and Latin America.
