Abstract
TORRES DE LA ROSA, Danaé. The first reaction to La luciérnaga by Mariano Azuela: artistic challenge and authorial prestige. Lit. mex [online]. 2011, vol.22, n.2, pp.45-71. ISSN 2448-8216.
From early reviews and letters by publishers and friends of Mariano Azuela, this essay will discuss the influences and reasons that led the author of Los de abajo to experiment in avant-garde literature. Despite the wide diffusion of his work and anxious hope for his new work, the publication of his book was not a commercial success. Socioliterary contextualization of La luciérnaga permits determining to what extent the creation of this novel is conditioned by the expectations of literary prestige, which in the 1930s weighed upon Azuela. Behind this trend is the nationalistic campaign that promoted creating and disseminating the myth of the Revolution and its results, always seeking to extend the footsteps of Los de abajo, a model which Azuela himself attempted to break with his avant-garde novels, but which only worked for a small group of readers.
