Abstract

SAMPERIO JIMENEZ, Daniel. Ambiguity of the Image: the Drive Dimension in El diablo en el ojo by Jesús Gardea. Lit. mex [online]. 2019, vol.30, n.1, pp.115-140. ISSN 2448-8216.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.30.1.2019.1161.

As Jesús Gardea was developing his narrative, the poetic image became one of his main stylistic resources as in the novel El diablo en el ojo (1989). His handiwork in the narrative reveals a zone of ambiguity from which emerges a dimension of driving forces in history. This article analyzes how this dimension is stylistically expressed in two initial passages of the novel, understood from the notions of Freud (life and death impulses), with the aim of investigating the ambiguous character of the image and the world vision that is projected. Prior to this, the complexity of the language and the way of narrating through images (metaphorical development) of Gardea is examined based on a necessary review of his conception of writing.

Keywords : Jesús Gardea; Poetic image; Metaphorical development; Drive; Psychoanalysis; Stylistics.
