Abstract

MARTINEZ DOMINGO, José María. Literature and Secularization in Latin American Modernismo: Celebrations, Homiletics and Porfirism in Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera. Lit. mex [online]. 2022, vol.33, n.2, pp.71-105.  Epub Aug 08, 2022. ISSN 2448-8216.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.litmex.2022.33.2.7731x03.

Through the hermeneutics of secularization, this article aims to continue the most recent and innovative interpretations of Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera’s work. More specifically, it pursues to deepen in the richness and complexity of Nájera’s spiritual and religious life as well as his uncompromised alignment with the political agenda of Porfirio Díaz’ regime. For that purpose, a small number of Nájera’s writings are analyzed which clearly show their dependence from the specific secularization process of that period. Those works will show Nájera´s personal treatment of religious celebrations and ceremonies, his peculiar revisiting of traditional homiletics and biblical exegesis, as well as his un-apologetical defense of Porfirism.

Keywords : Literature and secularization; modernism; Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, lent, porfirism.
