The knowledge-based bioeconomy (BBC) is a new approach to the economy that is based on the production, use and conservation of biological resources from the application of scientific knowledge, technology and innovations, to create innovative and efficient use of biomass, its purpose is the development of technological alternatives that help overcome dependence on fossil resources. This proposal arose in 2009 at the initiative of the OECD and the European Union, the degree of progress in the different countries has been a function of the characteristics of their National Innovation Systems (NIS). In this article, Latin American NIS are characterized in order to detect the current attributes for adopting the BBC. The study is based on a multivariate cluster analysis with 32 variables (socio-economic, environmental and scientific-technological) that allow Latin American NIS to be compared with those of the OECD, the EU and the BRICS.
