Abstract

ALARCON OSUNA, Moisés Alejandro. State Innovation Capacities: an Analysis of Their Principal Components. Econ: teor. práct [online]. 2021, n.55, pp.37-58.  Epub Oct 25, 2021. ISSN 2448-7481.  https://doi.org/10.24275/etypuam/ne/552021/alarcon.

The main objective of this study, which contributes to research already done on the innovation capacities of various Mexican states, is to find clusters or groupings of states with similarities in innovative capacity performance. A secondary aim is to describe the main indicators of such innovative ability. A hierarchical cluster analysis technique produced a dendogram that identifies eight clusters of states, while a principal component analysis technique was used as well, to find the variables that explain capacity performance. Two clusters stand out: the cluster formed solely by Mexico City that is noteworthy in the “innovation and knowledge management” component, and the Jalisco and Mexico State cluster, outstanding for its “public scientists, free internet and industrial secrets” component.

Keywords : Innovation capacity; cluster; principal components; O32; O18; C40.
