Abstract

TETREAULT, Darcy Víctor. Escuelas de pensamiento ecológico en las Ciencias Sociales. Estud. soc [online]. 2008, vol.16, n.32, pp.227-263. ISSN 0188-4557.

This essay outlines five schools of ecological thought in the social sciences: (1) mainstream sustainable development, which corresponds with the strategy delineated in the Brundtland Report and Agenda 21; (2) environmental economics, which represents an effort to incorporate ecological considerations into neoclassical economic theory; (3) ecological economics, which includes an analysis of energy flows and points towards the limitations of environmental economics; (4) political ecology, which seeks to analyze the complex socioeconomic dynamic behind environmental problems, focusing on power relations between different actors and social groups; and (5) agroecology, which seeks to conserve and develop the positive aspects of traditional peasant production. The objective is to construct a map in order to help guide those who are interested in exploring environmental issues through social scientific lenses.

Keywords : environment; sustainable development; environmental economics; ecological economics; political ecology and agroecology.
