Abstract

In the introduction are discussed some of the ecological, agronomic, socioeconomic and cultural consequences of the commercial release of transgenic maize in Mexico. Subsequently, the current process of privatization and concentration in production and seed trade worldwide and particularly in Mexico is described. Then, the opportunities and alternatives available to the situation described previously are mentioned. Later, aspects of biotechnology patents in the international context and the Plant Breeders Rights are indicated followed by the analysis of the proposed reforms to the Federal Law on Plant Varieties in the country. The paper concludes with a general discussion and conclusions.
