Abstract

FRESNEDA, Edel J.  and  FRESNEDA, José A.. Agroecology, an instrument for managing of rural tourism in Quintana Roo. Estud. soc [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.51. ISSN 0188-4557.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v28i51.509.

Objective: To assess how agroecology allows the integration of socio-economic activities in the rural area, addressing therefore a sustainable design for development. Methodology: published and current discussions about rural concept are addressed. From there, the definition of rural tourism is also examined. Results: An important result is the analysis about the usefulness of agroecology to engender endogenous and local development in rural areas in Quintana Roo, in which tangible and intangible heritage are integrated in current development. Limitations: A limitation of this proposal is that this design is ascribed to a specific context, thus it is replicable when similar circumstances are corroborated. Conclusions: The main conclusion refers an alternative design proposal for development, based on rural tourism but not emphasising in natural resources exclusively but instead incorporating the rural areas complexity.

Keywords : regional development; agro-ecology; rural tourism; sustainable development; local development; tangible and intangible heritage.
