Abstract

GRANADOS RAMIREZ, Rebeca. Monitoreo del desarrollo de cultivos de temporal en la Mesa Central, Guanajuato, México, usando imágenes NOAA AVHRR. Invest. Geog [online]. 1998, n.36, pp.45-55. ISSN 2448-7279.

The analysis of vegetation indexes derived from the visible and infrared bands of the Advenced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) onboard NOAA satellites, is a useful tool for monitoring density changes and crops heatth over an agricultural cycle. This work is an example of the use of detection techniques in cultivated areas. The study zone belongs to the physiographical province of 1he Guanajuato state, known as Mesa Central, which possesses, in general, physical characteristics such as homogeneous topography and soils and a well marked precipitation season. Among the crops growing in these areas, the most outstanding are bean and maize which had during the 1996 seeding-harvest period their most productive cycle within August - November. Field data such as temperature, daily precipitation and meteorological information at different atmospheric heights were gathered likewise. Cultivated and soils areas were digitized under ILWIS system environment. Additionally, data on seeding time, types used and growing, reproductive and maturity periods were obtained. Resuls of the relation among the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values obtained from satellite images at different dates and physical parameters such as precipitation, climatic adversities and growing period are presented.

Keywords : Vegetation Index; crops; growing period.
