Abstract

GERRITSEN, Peter R. W.  and  GONZALEZ FIGUEROA, Rodolfo. Comparison of four farming systems in the La Ciénega ejido. Invest. Geog [online]. 2008, n.65, pp.68-81. ISSN 2448-7279.

Today, agro-industrial food production causes much impact on the resource base and on socio-cultural structures. Contrary, the peasant production mode represents an agriculture based on farmer practices and experiences. In this article, four case studies are analyzed in the La Ciénega ejido in the South Coast of Jalisco, where both agro-industrial and peasant production systems co-exist. Our results illustrate the differences between the case studies, as well as their interrelations with the institutional context. The article concludes by stressing the need for strengthening (endogenous) development models based on farmers' practices and experiences.

Keywords : Farming systems; development; livelihood strategies.
