During the last two decades, and in the context of interdisciplinary efforts, a large body of literature dealing with vulnerability, adaptation and resilience to risk has been put in place by ecologists and ecological economists. To this end, the so-called social-ecological approximation is being used as basic analytical framework. This approach has become hegemonic in the definition of research agendas worldwide. The number of cites obtained by this research in key publications during the period amounts to several thousands. Nonetheless, criticism has arisen to this approach in Latin America and elsewhere. In this paper, I explore the theoretical foundations on which both, the hegemonic research and its criticism, are based.
