Abstract

In Mexicali during the last economic census of 2009 there were 20 330 trade economic units. It is estimated by commercial waste collectors that these establishments contribute with 22 % of urban solid waste generated in the city, however little is known about this type of waste. This paper presents the results of a generation and characterization study of commercial waste in Mexicali city. To develop this research, a commercial waste collection route was selected and identified the different type of business that were involved, then a characterization study was conducted during five consecutive days in landfill site. The results shows that organic matter represents 36.8 %, recyclables like paper and cardboard, plastic waste, metals, glass, textiles, etc.,56.1 % paper and cardboard contributes with 15.5 % and low density polyethylene with 10.6 %.
