Abstract
LECO TOMAS, Casimiro. Jaripeos Purépechas: Indigenous bull riding in Wendell, North Carolina, United States. Acta univ [online]. 2017, vol.27, n.2, pp.83-92. ISSN 2007-9621. https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2017.1089.
We analyze the historic, symbolic, and cultural meaning of jaripeo (bull-riding) practiced in the United States by the indigenous purhepecha who originate from Cheran, Michoacan, Mexico. We consider the “uses”, traditions, and customs that have been recently taken up again, and brought from the community of origin to the other side, inside their cultural bag-gage. Bull-riding events are carried out on special occasions to show their ethnic identity.
Keywords : Migrations, indigenous; purepecha; cultural and jaripeo.
