Abstract

SANDOVAL GARCIA, Edgar Roberto; FRANCO GONZALEZ, Rosa Laura Patricia Edith  and  FERNANDEZ MORALES, Juan Manuel. Electric vehicles: A solution to reduce greenhouse gases from the transport sector in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico?. Acta univ [online]. 2019, vol.29, e1964.  Epub Dec 01, 2019. ISSN 2007-9621.  https://doi.org/10.15174/au.2019.1964.

In Mexico, approximately 77.8% of the population already lives in urban areas, a situation that has generated several complex problems such as traffic congestion, air pollution, energy security and the effects of global warming. At an international level, Mexico has made a commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions coming from the transportation sector by 21% for 2030. The purpose of this study is to estimate the effectiveness of different types of electric vehicles (EV) to reduce the GHG from the transport sector in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (MZVM), for which different sources of electricity generation are compared by means of an algebraic analysis. As a result, renewable energy sources, which would supply the EV, would generate less GHG emissions annually due to their low level of equivalent carbon intensity, compared to internal combustion vehicles.

Keywords : Renewable energy; electric vehicles; carbon equivalent emissions; levelized costs of energy.
