Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds; minerals such as Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Zn; antioxidant capacity by DPPH, ABTS, and ORAC; and antihypertensive activity in pointleaf manzanita collected in Zacatecas. The content of flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, and phenolics was 52 mg catechin equivalents/100 g, 278 mg catechin equivalents/ 100 g, 67 mg coumarin equivalents/100 g, and 323 mg gallic acid equivalents/100 g, respectively. Regarding the antioxidant capacity, levels of 6214 μmol equivalents of trolox/100 g, 8465 μmol equivalents of trolox/100 g, and 7141 μmol equivalents of trolox/100 g were obtained for DPPH, ABTS, and ORAC, respectively. The antihypertensive activity, evaluated through the inhibition of the angiotensin converting enzyme I, presented an inhibition of 50%. The content of Ca and Fe detected in pointleaf manzanita fulfills the daily consumption requirements, and the content of Mg, Mn, and Zn were found in quantities below the recommended daily dose.
