Abstract

PLACENCIA, Luis. Kant and the will as practical reason. Tópicos (México) [online]. 2011, n.41, pp.63-104. ISSN 0188-6649.

In this article I provide an account of the difficult passage in the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals (GMS), in which Kant characterises the will as 'practical reason' (GMS, AA 04 412 26-31). I analyse six different interpretations of the aforementioned passage and I support one of them, which has not been considered by most of scholars. I argue that this interpretation is helpful to gain a better understanding of Kant's theory of action and the function of practical judgements (maxims and imperatives) in this theory.

Keywords : Maxim; imperative; practical syllogism; will; practical reason.
