Abstract

MARTINEZ I CUADRAS, Albert. The Concept of Plasticity in the First Works of Catherine Malabou. Tópicos (México) [online]. 2023, n.65, pp.89-111.  Epub June 09, 2023. ISSN 0188-6649.  https://doi.org/10.21555/top.v650.2103.

Already in her doctoral thesis, Malabou (1996) started to develop, based on a rereading of Hegel, a notion that will run through her entire work: the concept of plasticity. In this article, I analyze the main appearances of concept in the French author’s first works, in which she especially and explicitly establishes a conversation with Hegel, Heidegger, and Derrida, promising a concept of essence or form that incorporates difference without denying it. Although the concept of “plasticity” in Malabou’s work has undergone a turn, because of which it has entered into an open dialogue with biology and, more specifically, with contemporary neurosciences, in this article I analyze its status before said turn.

Keywords : plasticity; Malabou; form; difference; essence.
