Abstract

LAGUARDA, Rodrigo. Gay in Mexico: a struggle of representations and identity. Alteridades [online]. 2007, vol.17, n.33, pp.127-133. ISSN 2448-850X.

This paper uses the notion of representations -familiar to anthropology and cultural history- in order to explore the transformations that started occurring since the 70's in regards to the understanding of homosexual practices among males in Mexico City. Thus, a process is analyzed, in which traditional representations -linked to the reproduction of old gender roles and marked by injury- began to focus on the imported term taken from the English speaking world and related to the construction of a social identity as well as understood (at first) in a positive way.

Keywords : representations; gay; identity; Mexico City.
