This paper reviews the research on cinema audiences and theaters in Mexico, exploring the differences amongst the audiences in terms of gender, social background, regions or their relationship with national and foreign films. The analysis arises in the context of the restructuring of the audiovisual market and of the cultural habits, considering that the movies are not only screened in theaters, neither the audiences relate exclusively with one media. It is examined also the impact of the audience research on the design and evaluation of the cultural policies
