Abstract

HERNANDEZ, Alberto  and  O'CONNOR, Mary I.. Migration and Religious Conversion Among the Mixtec of Oaxaca. Alteridades [online]. 2013, vol.23, n.45, pp.09-23. ISSN 2448-850X.

A study and an analysis of the relation between migration and religious conversion among the Mixtec of Oaxaca -with relevant information on the sociocultural and religious processes of one of the ethnic groups with the greatest migration experiences at a national and international level. An approach based on historical and contextual aspects is developed on the migration of the Mixtec towards the northwest and the neighboring states in the United States. Likewise, artists related to migration and religious conversion are addressed. From an ethnological point of view, this study explores how the social networks established by these groups of immigrants to find job offers has also favored the emergence of Christian churches composed by Mixtec immigrants, such as the Church of Jesus Christ of the Americas, a religious project which has spread beyond Mexican borders and that has succeeded in developing in different places in the Mexican Pacific and the United States.

Keywords : migration; conversion; Mixtec.
