Abstract

FLORES MERCADO, B. Georgina. This is the Pirekua...: About Pirekuas, P'urhépecha Cultural Heritage and Tourism. Alteridades [online]. 2014, vol.24, n.48, pp.111-122. ISSN 2448-850X.

In November 2010 the pirekua, a traditional p'urhépecha chant, was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by Unesco. Its entry to the Representative List of Heritage generated contrasting opinions among the p'urhépecha population, since for a wide group of musicians, composers and pirericha (folk singers) this declaration responded to economic, more than cultural, interests, since it was the Ministry of Tourism of the state of Michoacan that led this heritage status. It also reflects on such nomination regarding the touristic market, from the discursive analysis of pirekua propaganda, issued by the state Ministry of Tourism.

Keywords : indigenous people; Mexican Government; touristic companies; Unesco; marketing; waste.
