Abstract
DE LA TORRE, Verónica and ALVAREZ, Alberto Martín. Violence, Rule of Law, and Punitive Policies in Central America. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.37, pp.33-50. ISSN 0188-7653.
This article suggests that high levels of violence and crime in the so called North Triangle of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras), together with the incapacity of the state of enforcing the rule of law, are causing growing anxiety among the population and are attracting the support of the community to implement authoritarian measures to fight crime. The response of the governments of the region in the face of the rise of crime and public demand for security has been the policies of "iron fist", and the use of "populist punitiveness" as a strategy to gain the backing of an electorate deeply concerned by insecurity.
Keywords : violence; rule of law; iron fist; populist punitiveness; Central America.
