Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the importance of institutional capacities for the establishment, development and boom of the automotive sector in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The complexity of this topic leads to taking into account a multitude of variables and actors due to the plurality of interests, leadership, conflicts and exercise of power that intersect between these actors. The boom in the auto industry in San Luis Potosí can be explained by the variable of institutional capacities manifested by local governments whose importance is multidimensional and multifactorial. With a qualitative research method and through the realization of different interviews with specific actors, we reach the main conclusion that multilevel cooperation represents a tool for strengthening local economic development. In this sense, the demands of the automotive sector at the local level have generated a change in governmental action.
