Recognizing the importance of rurality and urbanity to develop public policies and economic strategies, this article presents the updating of a rurality index for Mexico´s municipalities, based on multivariate techniques by an analytical hierarchy process, in which comparability over time was a priority. The index describes the dynamic and geographical distribution of rurality in Mexico and shows that there is progress towards urbanity, although very rural municipalities persist. To illustrate the use and relevance of the index, a housing program has been evaluated.
