From both normative and empirical viewpoints, the stability of liberal democracy depends on its citizens’ disposition toward tolerance. In modern contemporary societies, however, an erroneous understanding of tolerance generates dynamics that dissolve rational dialogue, oppose the democratic embracing of diverse interests, and threaten pluralism. Ultimately, since it contains new, potentially conflictive forms of diversity, the social context of late modernity cannot eschew tolerance.
