Abstract

GARCIA REY, María del Rocío. Infancia y modernidad: José Martí y "La Exposición de París". Polít. cult. [online]. 2014, n.41, pp.191-205. ISSN 0188-7742.

This paper revolves around José Martí's 1889 "The Paris World Exhibition" text, originally published in the children's magazine La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age). My aim is to point out how Martí, based on utopian thought, presented his view of historical transformation through children's literature, and how Latin America and his own childhood held a place in the alter mundis. I will show that, according to the poet, the construction of a new political and cultural order for "our America" could be part of the vicissitudes of Modernity.

Keywords : childhood; modernity; utopia; the peoples; Latin America.
