Abstract

MARINO-MENDEZ, Helia et al. Hyperandrogenism in postmenopausal women: a case report. Ginecol. obstet. Méx. [online]. 2021, vol.89, n.1, pp.51-57.  Epub Jan 17, 2022. ISSN 0300-9041.  https://doi.org/10.24245/gom.v89i1.4406.

BACKGROUND:

Hyperandrogenism is a clinical picture characterized by excess production of androgens of ovarian or adrenal origin accompanied or not by clinical signs of female virilization. It is scarce in postmenopause and can be caused by benign pathologies or malignant tumors.

CLINICAL CASE:

A 64-year-old patient, with menarche at 12 years and menopause at 51, nulliparous. In treatment for mixed dyslipidemia and hypothyroidism after total thyroidectomy. She presented a characteristic clinical picture with increased terminal hair, lower voice, increased clitoris and libido. Normal hormonal profile except for testosterone above physiological levels for menopause. After performing the relevant studies, ovarian origin was suspected and a laparoscopic bilateral adnexectomy was scheduled. After surgery, the anatomical-pathological diagnosis of benign stromal hyperplasia was made, and the symptoms disappeared.

CONCLUSIONS:

hyperandrogenism in the post menopause is infrequent and we must carry out an adequate anamnesis, exploration and clinical orientation for its study and typification. There are benign and malignant causes of ovarian and adrenal origin.
