Abstract

COLLANTES GUTIERREZ, Fernando  and  DOMINGUEZ MARTIN, Rafael. La demografía importa: convergencia y cambio estructural por defecto en las regiones y provincias españolas, 1959-1999. Prob. Des [online]. 2006, vol.37, n.146, pp.147-168. ISSN 0301-7036.

This study analyzes the phenomena of convergence and structural change experienced in Spain's regions and provinces over the past four decades, arguing that the demographic variables had a significant role in this. Concretely, it shows that population decline (in absolute or relative terms) contributed in numerous provinces to the establishment of convergence patterns and structural change by default. This process of economic convergence cannot therefore be considered as a Pareto optimum.

Keywords : regional convergence; population decline; de-agrarianism; stationary state.
