Abstract

MONCAYO JIMENEZ, Edgard. La transformación del Estado en América Latina: una perspectiva económica desde los países andinos. Prob. Des [online]. 2006, vol.37, n.147, pp.135-159. ISSN 0301-7036.

From several analytical perspectives, the sovereignty of the nation-state is being broken down in three ways: upwardly by globalization and super-nationalization; horizontally by the dismantling of the welfare state, privatization and regulation; and downwardly by the decentralization and devolution of autonomy to regional and local levels. The present study affirms that, rather than a simple hollowing out of the nation-state, the entity is experiencing a profound transformation and an up-scaling in the three directions referred to. To illustrate this, we analyze the specific case of the five Andean countries, emphasizing the economic aspects.

Keywords : nation-state; globalization; welfare state; decentralization; coordinator state.
