Abstract

TINOCO ALFARO, Carlos Alberto; RAMIREZ FONSECA, Alfonso; VILLARREAL FARIAS, Everardo  and  RUIZ CORRAL, Ariel. Stand arrangement of maize hybrids, leaf area index and seed yield. Agric. Téc. Méx [online]. 2008, vol.34, n.3, pp.271-278. ISSN 0568-2517.

In the south of Veracruz 250 000 hectares of maize with a potential yield of 9 t ha-1 are cultivated; nevertheless, the regional average it does not surpass 2 t ha-1. Population density and the spatial arrangement of plants are factors that limit the production of maize, both of them generate losses of yield of 3.5 t ha-1. With the objective of generating information that minimize the yield loss due to these factors, study was carried out to evaluate yield and the leaf area index (LAI), based on spacial arrangement of plantas and densities of population in two maize hybrids. With LAI and yield data, a model was generated to predict yield. The study was carried out in Acayucan, Veracruz, from 1999-2001, under a complete randomized blocks design arranged into split plots, planting two hybrids in large plots, three distances among rows in medium plots and three distances among plants into small plots. Statistical significance was observed for distances among rows and plants, as well as for the interaction between hybrids and separation among plants. The best distance among rows was of 70 cm; whereas for the distance among plants the optimal ones were 20 and 40 cm. The analysis of LAI on the yield generated a linear regression for each of the three years, with regression coefficients of 0.61, 0.64 and 0.72, with acceptable correlation and determination coefficients.

Keywords : densities of population; distance among furrows; distances among plants; hot units.
