Abstract

SOLIS MOYA, Ernesto et al. Maya S2007: New bread wheat variety for "El Bajio" region, Mexico. Agric. Téc. Méx [online]. 2008, vol.34, n.3, pp.365-370. ISSN 0568-2517.

During the winter growing cycles from 2004-2005 to 2006-2007 the average area planted to wheat at El Bajío region in the state of Guanajuato was 101 000 ha, with an average yield of 6 t ha-1. The main objective in the wheat breeding program at El Bajio Experimental Station of the National Research Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock is to develop new cultivars of higher yield and rust resitance than the actual commercial cultivars in use. Here, the new cultivar 'Maya S2007' is described. Maya S2007 carry the genes Lr1 y Lr10 of resistance to wheat leaf rust plus two adult plant resistant genes. Maya S2007 yields 3% more than Barcenas 2002 and is more resistant to yellow stripped rust and its grain is of similar quality.
