Abstract

LOPEZ, Socorro; OSORIO, Guillermo; GALLARDO, Tzayhrí  and  ARELLANO, Sofía. Preparación, caracterización y efecto de la temperatura de fijación del pilar en la adsorción de vapor de agua de una arcilla pilarizada de aluminio. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2002, vol.46, n.2, pp.140-144. ISSN 0583-7693.

An aluminium pillared clay (Al-PILC) was prepared from a Mexican natural clay. Both clays were characterized by chemical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray powder diffraction, giving evidence of the intercalation of the aluminium pillars in the interlayer space of the clay. The effect of the fixing pillar temperature (200, 300, 500 and 900 °C) on the water vapor adsorption capacity of the Al-PILC was studied comparing their water vapor adsorption isotherms at 23 °C. The Al-PILC prepared at a fixing pillar temperature of 200 °C showed the highest water vapor adsorption capacity. This capacity decreased as the fixing pillar temperature increased. The GAB (Guggenheim, Anderson & Boer) and HJ (Harkins & Jura) isotherm models were applied to the experimental data, obtaining that the GAB model described them in the whole relative humidity range and therefore its use is recommended for inorganic adsorbents.

Keywords : Pillared clays; water vapor adsorption capacity; PILCs sorption isotherms; isotherms models.
