Abstract

GOMEZ LIM, Miguel A.. La producción de vacunas y otros compuestos farmacéuticos en plantas transgénicas. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2002, vol.46, n.3, pp.264-270. ISSN 0583-7693.

Even though higher plants have been utilized for many years for medicinal purposes, it has been only recently that they have been engineered to serve as biorreactors to produce a number of pharmaceutical compounds. Considering the increasing need for these compounds at a world level, the use of plants for these purposes is also on the rise. The current cost of many of these compounds severely limits the availability and use. Plant-based compounds are, on the contrary, safe, cheap to produce and store and production can be easily scaled up. This article reviews the progress in the field.

Keywords : Transgenic plants; biorreactors; pharmaceutical compounds; vaccunes.
