Abstract

BRAVO, Humberto et al. Degradación del material pétreo de la zona arqueológica de El Tajín, Veracruz, México, por efecto de la lluvia ácida. Rev. Soc. Quím. Méx [online]. 2003, vol.47, n.4, pp.328-330. ISSN 0583-7693.

In this work we studied the effect of acid rain on limestone rock sample from El Tajin, Veracruz. Acidic water, with ionic concentration similar to acid rain samples from El Tajin, was applied to the rock sample in a laboratory setting. The experiment was performed in a chamber designed to accelerate simulated environmental exposure. To further accelerate the deterioration of the limestone sample, simulated acid rain with a reduced pH (4.4) was also applied. Our results allow us to propose a mechanism for the dissolution of the rock, and to determine the calcium carbonate quantity was dissolved by acid rain.

Keywords : Acid rain; Limentone rock; El Tajín.
