Abstract
ACEVEDO-OLIVA, Bertha Minerva; RODRIGUEZ-PAZ, Carlos Agustín and STEVENS-AMARO, Guillermo Enrique. A potosin woman in the surgery, midwifery and teaching of the first half of the twentieth century. Cir. gen [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.3, pp.216-220. ISSN 1405-0099.
The biography of Dra. Maria de Jesus Urestí Leija (1900 - 1987) is described, who began her professional life as a midwife, at 20 years of age, according to the old curriculum of the early twentieth century; was the fourth female doctor graduated in the then Scientific and Literary Institute of San Luis Potosí; she developed an extraordinary surgical activity, being the first woman in the State of San Luis Potosí to perform trauma, orthopedic, and gastro-surgical procedures, among others, such as the former war surgeons. She was part of the professor of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, among other institutions; likewise, she practiced private medicine. Her multiple facets and dynamism made her remembered by multiple generations of students she prepared and patients she saved, remaining a symbol in the transition from the Porfirian Mexico to the beginning as a graduate midwife, becoming a surgeon women and university professor.
