Abstract

The sanitary emergency created by the new SARS-CoV-2 virus, had required the immediate response from healthcare professionals, in a dizzying way, responding to an increased number of patients that require hospitalization exponentially. This emergency required healthcare professionals to immediately address this situation generated by this pandemic, even with shortage of supplies necessary for patient care, including personal protective equipment. This article, intends to explain the differences between surgical masks and respirators, performance principles of N95 respirators, equivalent testing and certifications worldwide (including NOM-116-STPS-2009) and the strategies to optimize the use and of these devices during the sanitary emergency due SARS-CoV-2.
