Abstract

CERVANTES-GUTIERREZ, Oscar et al. Intestinal malrotation and cecum volvulus. Case presentation and bibliographic review. Cir. gen [online]. 2021, vol.43, n.4, pp.259-264.  Epub June 09, 2023. ISSN 1405-0099.  https://doi.org/10.35366/109130.

Introduction:

intestinal malrotation is the result of an alteration during embryonic development. The absence of the Treitz ligament together with the mesenteric fixation failures causes a displacement of the small intestine towards the right side of the abdomen, accompanied by a localized cecum on the left side, remaining attached to the abdominal wall by fibrous peritoneal bands “Ladd bands”, associated with caecal volvulus and intestinal obstruction.

Clinical case:

we present the clinical case of a 61-year-old female patient who arrived to the emergency room presenting an acute abdomen secondary to caecal volvulus and intestinal obstruction associated with intestinal malrotation.

Conclusions:

it is necessary to have a high index of suspicion in patients with acute abdomen since most of the patients go through their adult life asymptomatic or with non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms.

Keywords : volvulus; cecum; intestinal malrotation; intestinal obstruction.
