Abstract

PLATTS, Mark. La graduación de lo voluntario. Isonomía [online]. 2008, n.28, pp.53-66. ISSN 1405-0218.

Some contemporary philosophers (White, Williams) offer theories of the voluntary which fail to take into consideration its degrees; by looking at his account of the role of the will in coercion, this paper suggests that Frankfurt is another of those philosophers. Then, by means of a modification to the theory of coercion put forward by Frankfurt, I present here a theory of how aversions of people to doing what they in fact do determine the degrees of the voluntary in their behaviour. In this context I also assess a claim made by Aquinas, apparently endorsed by Davidson, about the way in which strong emotions like fear modify the degrees of the voluntary.
