Abstract

Plasticity is the phenotypic variability of a species without genetic alteration. The objectives of the study were: i) to evaluate morphometric variables in nursery plants of selected families of Pinus pseudostrobus superior trees in resin production; ii) determine the phenotypic plasticity index and the coefficient of variation of morphological variables; and iii) correlate the morphometric variables biomass and quality indices with their average plasticity. In resin-producing areas in the Indigenous Community of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacan, the altitudinal range (2500 m to 2800 m a.s.l.) was divided into three gradients where 27 superior trees were selected, and seed was collected to propagate 405 plants in a nursery. The variables basal diameter, total height, and aerial and root biomass were analyzed under an experimental design of incomplete blocks of the a-Lattice type; furthermore, Dickson quality index, slenderness, lignification, plasticity, and biomass ratio were calculated and correlated. Differences between the morphometric variables in the half-sib families were detected. The middle gradient showed the best plant quality and plasticity, while in the extreme gradients, plants have less adaptation characteristics. The correlation indicates a positive association between plasticity and basal diameter, which is an indirect indicator of lignification. The characterization of each family is an indirect tool for the selection of germplasm that shows the differences in adaptation and genetic constitution of progenitors.
