Abstract

CASTANEDA GARCIA, Rafael. Struggles upon Jurisdiction: A Dispute over a Devotion: The Arrival of Saint Philip Neri’s Oratorians in San Miguel el Grande Ville, 1712-1742. Hist. graf [online]. 2018, n.51, pp.89-121. ISSN 1405-0927.

This article shows the conflict that occurred with the arrival of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in San Miguel el Grande, with the brotherhood of the mulattoes and the parish priest of the town. The dispute took place in several stages, as the Philippians came to invade the church of the brotherhood, so that cohabitation of this religious space powers and problems brought economic benefits to both sides. Another disagreement was with the priest, as it was against the independence of the church of the Oratorians, who wanted to stop being parish help. The latest fighting was for control of the devotion of Ecce Homo, which belonged to the brotherhood, and in which the Philippians through their speeches tried to discredit the mulattos. In this story, the three actors show their interests, and a realignment of pacts that sought to harmonize the parties is given, the truth is that the arrival of the Philippians came to change the religious and cultural life of the town in the 18th Century.
