Abstract

SALGADO AVILA, Eduardo Rafael. Political Instrumentalization of the Awqaf in the Ottoman Empire. Hist. graf [online]. 2021, n.56, pp.347-365.  Epub Feb 23, 2021. ISSN 1405-0927.  https://doi.org/10.48102/hyg.vi56.347.

The Ottoman Empire had under its control a vast territory that brought complexity and diversity with it. To exercise authority in multiple areas with different characteristics, the Ottomans reshaped various institutions, including the waqf. The objective of this study is to analyze the ways in which the institution of the waqf was instrumentalized by the Ottoman Empire with the aims of domination and control. This work provides an examination of the Ottoman capacity to adapt to different circumstances in order to extend their domain. Likewise, it questions the charitable ideal of the waqf by evaluating different definitions of the concept, as well as its relation to the methods of conquest and the design of cities implemented by the Ottoman Empire.

Keywords : Domination; Control; Design of Cities; Conquest; Otomanization.
