Abstract

SANTAMARIA GARCIA, Antonio. Temas y controversias del debate histórico internacional reciente en torno a la industria azucarera. Am. Lat. Hist. Econ [online]. 2006, n.25, pp.5-42. ISSN 2007-3496.

This article reviews the recent evolution of the international debate on the history of the sugar industry. After the symposia organized in the eighties by B. Albert and A. Graves of the United Kingdom, the discussion underwent an impasse, recovering in the last years. Through the papers presented in these meetings, as well as further contributions in other events and collective books, the article examines the modification of investigative issues and approaches. In general, there has been no change in the analysis of certain problems, such as technological change, but new aspects and methods of investigation are now used enriching our knowledge of the history of sugar industry.

Keywords : Sugar; sugar cane; 15th-20th centuries; Europe; Asia; Africa; America; Oceania; technology; labour; economy; society; culture; historiography.
