Abstract

LEYVA-MIR, Santos G.; TERRONES-RODRIGUEZ, Juliana; HERRERA-ESPINO, Julio  and  VILLASENOR-MIR, Héctor E.. Analysis of components of slow-rusting resistance to rust (Puccinia triticina Eriks.) in wheat leaves. Agrociencia [online]. 2008, vol.42, n.4, pp.443-449. ISSN 2521-9766.

In Puccinia triticina, slow-rusting resistance (SRR) is a slow process of infection in the field; thus, it is important to generate slow-rusting varieties resistant to wheat leaf rust. To do so, forms of inheritance and management of wheat varieties must be identified. To determine the components of slow-rusting resistance to rust (P. triticina Eriks.) in wheat leaf, seedlings of 20 flour wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes were evaluated in a growing chamber using the P. triticina physiological race MCJ/SP. Dormant period, size and number of pustules were measured. The genotypes Kakatsi, Tarachi F2000, Kuruku, Jupateco+Lr34-Sr2, Oaxaca local flour race, and Rayon F89 exhibited a longer dormant period. The Kuruku and Kakatsi genotypes had smaller and fewer pustules per cm2. It is concluded that a genotype with a high level of this type of resistance can be identified by measuring any of the SRR components during the seedling stage.

Keywords : Puccinia triticina; Triticum aestivum; slow-rusting resistance components; seedling; growth chamber.
