Abstract

CHAGAS DORREY, Raquel C.. Los maestros frente a la violencia entre alumnos. RMIE [online]. 2005, vol.10, n.27, pp.1071-1082. ISSN 1405-6666.

This article includes part of the results of a study on violence among students, carried out at an elementary school in Mexico. Interviews were completed with the director, teachers and students, and open and closed questionnaires and other techniques were used to detect the level, characteristics and causes of such conduct. The paper addresses teachers' social representations of children's violence, and discusses how these representations are contradictory when they resolve conflicts in the classroom and among students. Such a lack of coherence affects the transmission of values to students. It generates confusion about students' responsibility for their actions and influences the type of relationships children establish with their peers.

Keywords : Violence at school; elementary education; teachers; social representations; Mexico.
